Sycamore Gap - Not Just a Tree

May 23, 2024 3 min read

Many of you will know that I have been designing products to commemorate Sycamore Gap since last year.

I went to visit this iconic landmark in the North for the first time in the summer of 2023. Little did I know that this would be the first and the last time I would visit.

You can read more about that here.

I wanted to share a new development and some facts and significant pieces of information about this beautiful tree. Along with my new keyring design which is something that you can carry with you wherever you go. It's a memento with a very special message hidden in the landscape.

  1. Location: Sycamore Gap is located along Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland, Northern England. The tree stood in a dramatic dip between two hills and became one of the most photographed spots in the UK.

  2. Historical Context: Hadrian's Wall is a UNESCO World Heritage site, built by the Romans in AD 122 as a defensive fortification in the north of England. Sycamore Gap lies in the middle of this historic landscape, adding to its scenic and historical value.

  3. Cultural Impact: The Sycamore Gap tree, often referred to as the "Robin Hood Tree," gained fame from its appearance in the 1991 film "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" starring Kevin Costner. This boosted its iconic status and drew visitors from around the world.

  4. Environmental Significance: The lone sycamore tree became a symbol of natural beauty and resilience, standing prominently in the rugged Northumberland landscape. It was a beloved landmark for hikers and nature enthusiasts exploring the region.

  5. Local Importance: For the people of the North, Sycamore Gap was more than just a tree; it was a cherished part of their natural heritage. Its striking presence in the landscape embodied a sense of place and identity for the local community. I often get my customer sharing their stories on the quayside with me. They have told me about the proposals they have made, the ashes they have scattered and the annual family visits to this beautiful location. This is why Sycamore Gap holds such a special place in peoples hearts.

  6. Tragic Loss: In 2023, the Sycamore Gap tree was illegally felled, causing widespread outrage and sorrow. The loss was felt deeply by both locals and those who had visited and admired its beauty over the years. I was also approached by international media to use some of my content with their audiences. The depth of feeling and loss was felt far beyond the North of England.

  7. Commemoration: The creation of commemorative items, like the enamel keyring designed in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter, helps keep the memory of Sycamore Gap alive. These mementos serve as a tribute to the tree and a reminder of the importance of preserving our natural landmarks. I have also designed other products within this range including mugs, cushions and bags, you can take a look at these here.

  8. Efforts for Restoration: Since the felling, there have been discussions and efforts towards the restoration and replanting of a new tree in the gap, aiming to revive the spirit and beauty of the iconic landscape. I recently saw a call out by the Northumberland National Park Authority for the commission of a permanent public exhibition to celebrate this beautiful landmark. I am intrigued to see what happens as a result and which talented artist gets this very important job.
