Days out with children in the North East - happy day tripping!

We love family time, which is why we've found five of the best days out with children in the North East. And while the PB children are slightly older now, it’s still nice to have a lovely list of places to go when we pack up a picnic and head out for the day.

That’s why I’ve pulled together this blog of five amazing places to go for a lovely day out with the children.

So whether you enjoy a good walk round a park, a trip to a play area or a day filled with adventure and activity, this blog has something for everyone. Read on to discover the family-friendly treasures our region has.

One of my favourite places on earth, Saltwell Park is a haven of fun, relaxation and adventure for kids of all ages. Situated in the heart of Gateshead, it’s my go-to place for a walk, a bit of peace and quiet or a cuppa in the sunshine. Saltwell Park is a glorious Victorian park, opened in 1876 and has won many awards since then. 

It’s perfect for a family day out with a gorgeous dene to explore. There's also a fantastic picnic area to enjoy your lunch and it has two beautiful play areas too. Once you’ve played the morning away, take a stroll around Pets’ Corner and discover the William Wailes maze for a little extra adventure.

As a traditional British seaside destination, Whitley Bay has been through some ups and downs in years gone by. But with the redevelopment of the glorious Spanish City in recent years, the utter joy of Whitley Bay has been discovered  again. Therefore it offers a glorious day out for all the family. 

With an award-winning high street for lovers of shopping, to play parks galore throughout the town, Whitley Bay really is a fantastic place to head for a family day out. Even without mentioning the beautiful beaches of Whitley Bay, Cullercoats and Tynemouth, there’s so much to keep everyone busy.

For instance, the skatepark on the promenade and the arcades in the shadow of the iconic Spanish City dome. Then there's the delicious ice creams and fish and chips and a trip to St Mary’s Island to see the lighthouse and rockpool at its feet.

Anyone who hasn’t been out on a boat to see the puffins and other wildlife surrounding the beautiful Farne Islands really needs to get it scheduled in. Take a picturesque trip up the coast to Seahouses where you’ll find loads of bookable trips out to the islands.

On a still day, the boat trip out is a pleasure in its own right, But just wait until you’re floating around the islands, watching the puffins and enjoying the view back towards our amazing coastline. 

Once you’re back on dry land, why not check out the family activities available in Seahouses? There’s mini golf, shopping, ice creams, arcades, fish and chips, In other words, everything you could need on a family day out!

Where to start? There’s so much to explore in this amazing city that it really would take more than just one day to see it all. From museums and parks to riverside entertainment and areas of incredible historical interest. There’s something for everyone in this fair city. 

But if you’re new to Newcastle, why not head for the quayside? There you’ll see some of the most iconic sites the city has to offer. From the Tyne Bridge and the Sage to the Baltic Art Gallery and the ‘blinking eye’ millennium bridge.

Enjoy a drink or a bite to eat on the quayside before crossing the river to visit the Baltic or to check out the incredible Sage. There’s fresh air, gorgeous views and plenty of opportunities to stop, take it all in and enjoy the atmosphere.

As a small city in the North East of England, Durham is one of the places to hold a small piece of my heart. 

Beautiful, picturesque and historical, Durham is one of the great university cities in the UK and has the most amazing cathedral at its heart. There’s so much to do in and around Durham for all the family. For that reason, like Newcastle, it needs more than one visit to do it justice.

From the sights and sounds of the city itself to venturing further afield to discover the delights of Beamish Open Air Museum, there’s so much do.
